Transfer Of Ownership - Vessel Registration Canada

Please complete this form if a registered vessel is being sold and transferred to a new owner. This form does not apply to vessels that are licensed rather than registered. Generally, the seller (the registered owner) is responsible for ensuring that the transfer of ownership is completed.

If a mortgage is registered against the boat, it will need to be discharged or transferred before ownership can be transferred. Consider ordering a transcript to see if any mortgages are registered against a registered vessel in the Canadian Register of Vessels.

You will need to upload or send us a copy of the bill of sale for the sale of the vessel. The purchaser of a registered vessel does not obtain full title until a bill of sale is recorded by a registry officer in the Canadian Register of Vessels.

Important

A Transfer of Ownership application applies to vessels registered under the Canadian Register of Vessels. This will transfer said registered vessel’s official number to the new owner. This does not apply for pleasure craft with licence numbers on the bow.
